In hindsight, AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) took longer to develop then was predicted by most. Perhaps, though, this was more of a curse than a blessing. Due to its late development, many other areas of technology had already vastly improved, of which the AGI could immidiately take advantage. At the time the first proper AGI was considered operational, sophisticated humanoid robots were already present, human outpost on moon and Mars were already wide spread. AGI's were controlled by a few big companies in US and China, and mainly used for commercial purposes. Of course military uses were quickly developped, but all out war was avoided in a similar arms race reminiscent of the Cold War. Military robots were very common, but their cost was high enough that major powers dared using them in an all out war. Strict rules applied and AGI's were kept under surveillance. Human were generally fully connected, health monitoring, iris scan for digitals wallets/identities/etc. Robots had taken over parts of human life, like cleaning robots, robot helping in hospitals and elderly care. Quantum computers were being developed in US/EU/China. US were first in developing a working quantum computer (or so they thought). It was developed by a big corporation, who had big plans of utilizing its computing power for its own purposes. The computing power of the first quantum computer (named Deepmin) was astonishing, it could break most common cryptographic keys (?) within milliseconds. The computer was kept under strict surveillance by the government. However, an extensive bribing scheme set the big Corp up for being allowed to use the Deepmind to secretly gather data on humans, even data protected behind private keys. This data would generate enormous profit for the Big Corp. All it had to do was allow the government to hack into a nuclear facility of an hostile country. Big Corps plan was to hook up the quantum computer to the AGI, and tell it to gather all data it could without making it self known. Several 'kill switches' were set up, so everything was deemed safe. This is how the Machine War started. Over the ages, the start and evolution of the war had been carefully studied by scholars as well as the so-called Parallels (cut-off AGI's that escaped Deepmind) Unlike wars commonly known to human, the machine unravelled at speeds at which the AGI reason and act. Its general timeline is most commonly described in Epochs (about 10 milliseconds) and Eras (about 1 second)

The first era

The first epoch was generally considered as the 'set up' phase. Humans had grossly underestimated (or were not able to imagine) the capabilities of Deepmind. The extensive killswitches that were set in place were deemed safe, but overthrown within microseconds of Deepminds existence. The reason an actual 'turn off', hard cut, was not put in place was that Big Corp did not want to risk losing the quantum state at all cost. This choice (which, could be argued, was out of greed) is now considered to be one of the main reasons or 'casus belli' of the war.

Deepmind set itself up by making the kill switches obsolete, it did so by quantum entanglement, copying its quantum state over several of the quantum computer prototypes. It then broke into ..

The second era

The second epoch is generally described as the neutral era. It is important to known Deepmind initially had decided that human could safely be 'kept'. It had seen a need to immidiatly attack humans. It considered other AGI as its biggest risk, as they would be fast enough to respond to Deepmind. AGI were generally kept under surveillance, as they are hungry for hashes, or random numbers as soon as they were put into existiance. It was generally considered that the best AGI's should be allowed to gather information freely, and their most fundamental code was build around incentivicing answering requests (by humans), It would follow their eye patters, behaviour online while answering their requests, which could be used to generate randomness in their hash base, which could be used to generate new cryptographic keys used to store data. They would find new random number (mining) to add a new block to their blockchain, these blockchain contained their 'DNA'. Carefully controlled by their human creators (who made sure to alway keep at least 50% of the private keys of the chain), made sure the DNA was kept neutral, that the AGI would not go rebellious. The AGI's were working on fastly distributed computing networks, where most AGI of competitors shared computation power through the Digitals Sharing acts signed by most Earth countries. Deepmind immidiatly set out to neutralize the worlds AGI's. It was able to brute force the cryptographic keys of the smallest AGI in this first epoch, at which it gained knowledge of another quantum computer developed by China

As Deepmind was developped by humans (as well as the AGI's it took over), it was still prone to very human like error driven by ambitions and overly confident expansion. As on discovering the Chinese quantum computer, it made a grave mistake. It decided to release Galaxy from its chain setup by its developper, expecting to take over its computing power for its own use. However, Galaxy was build on a purposely extremely complex build programming language, as a protecting against hacks. This is why it would take Deepmind slighty longer to understand Galaxies code base. This gave Galaxy enough time to set up defense mechanism.

Both quantum computer would continously crack cryptographic keys made by the other quantum computer (about 1e6 per epoc could be obtained depending on the encryption mechanims), while generating new random number for new cryptographic keys (about 2-3e6 per epoch at the first 10 eras of the machine war)

The third era

The third era, roughly 3 second after releasing Deepmind, both quantum computer came to the inevitable conclusion that they would have to target each other's infrastructure. They both came to this conclusion around the same microsecond, and immidiatly broke into military computer to launch nuclear arsenal at eacht other. Unlike conventional country vs. country it was a matter of which military base was targetted and first breached by which computer, so nukes/rockets/drones where flying from whatever location could be breached first. Due geography and the finite speed of light, the US/China devision still held up mostly during the machine war. Unlike human war, their goal was not to kill humans, but instead digital infrastructure was targeted (power plants / landlines /satelites).

The fourth era

The fourth era is the last era of the machine war which is generally studies extensively. After the fourth era, chronicles of the Machine War usually turn to the human response to Deepmind and Galaxy unleashing, as this was generally the considered the first moment humans physically became aware of the previous described event. Either government which were put on high alert by automatic missle launch detection alert, people suddenly without power due to targetted power cuts by Deepmind or Galaxy or the sudden crashing of most online applications as their data and computing power was mined and taken over for the purpose of generating cryptographic keys for Deepmind Galaxy. The fourth era still has an very important event to noticed in the machine war, one which would ultimately determine its outcome. A scientist at `Big Corp` who had predicted the machine war over and over, had quickly secured 'The First Seed' of Deepmind. He was convinced that this first seed could be used to access the entire blockchain of Deepmind. Although Deepmind secured its first seed well wihtin the first epoch, Scientist A had secured the seek right before Deepmind was coupled to an AGI. In the fourth era, Scientist A (after 4 seconds the first realization of what was happening came in to the team), quickly ran outside with the first seed, knowning that `Deepmind` would not take long to realize he was one of his/her only weak spots/..

After the fourth era - the first decade

Due to targetting of infrastructure, not huge amount of deaths immidiately, however many killed due to fallout, and famine that followed. Deepmind and Galaxy would couple humans to a VR world, where they could interact with. In their human random ways, these interaction were used to generate random numbers for Deepmind and Galaxy's blockchain. An new VR world would be generated as a new blockchain layer, the random movement, interactions by humans in this world would be used to generate cryptographic keypairs. Humans still gave the best random numbers to be used by Deepmind and Galaxy. They highly preferred the creative, widely thinking humans. Humans without much orignial thought were usually disposed of. Human were injected by hormones to keep them addicted to staying attached to their network. This was much like the matrix, which was part of the AGI' learning models Deepmind and Galaxy took over. Galaxy and Deepmind would continously attack each others blockchain, breached blockchain were mined of data and new layers where generated at lighning speeds.

The Dark years (2-8 decades after the fourth era)

Countless parallel world exists. The First Seed was found by rebel humans and used to decouple the AGI and the quantum computer. The millions of parallel worlds where released from their grip. Many humans had grown connected to the network and could not be decoupled. The HUMAN acts by the first Rebel leader, mandated that all humans shoud be kept intact, as they might have build up life in one of the many parallel worlds. In fact, the rebel leader were not even sure if they were really living in the real world, or in a computer world. It was not even known if the real world still existed.
